Emigration from Uzbekistan decreased by 30% in 2019

In 2019, 13,246 individuals left Uzbekistan to take up permanent residence in another country, a 30.3% decrease on 2018 (19,006 people), a report from the country’s State Committee on Statistics has revealed (in Russian).

More than half (57.5%) of Uzbek emigrants moved to Kazakhstan. In second place came Russia (37.7%) and in third place the USA (with just 0.8%). In 2018, Russia had occupied first spot (47.2%), followed by Kazakhstan (47.1%), and the USA (1.2%).

The number of those arriving in Uzbekistan for permanent residence in 2019 also fell in comparison with the previous year. In 2019, 2527 people immigrated to Uzbekistan, while the figure for 2018 came to 2849. Traditionally, the countries of origin of those taking up permanent residence in Uzbekistan are Kazakhstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

The Committee’s report includes a number of other interesting demographic statistics. For instance, in 2019, the permanent population of Uzbekistan increased by 650,300 (2%) to 33.9 million. Of this number, 17.1 million, or 50.5%, live in towns and cities, while 16.8 million, or 49.5% live in rural areas. The proportion of the population living in urban and rural areas showed no change over the last 12 months.

In 2019, 310,900 marriages were registered in the country, a small decrease on 2018 (311,400). The number of divorces also fell in the same period, from 32,300 in 2018 to 31,400 in 2019.
