In Uzbekistan, ahead of May 9, celebrated as the Day of Remembrance and Honor, every World War II veteran and disabled veteran will receive a payment of $10,000. The corresponding decree by President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has been published on the official website of the head of state.

Relevant ministries and agencies have also been instructed to allocate 25 million Uzbek soums ($1,930) to citizens with statuses equivalent to World War II participants.

Additionally, home front workers from the 1941–1945 wartime period will receive 3 million soums ($230) by May 9.

According to the decree, all expenses related to honoring the veterans will be covered by the republican budget.

Mirziyoyev also signed a resolution on the “Preparation and Commemoration of the 80th Anniversary of Victory in World War II and the Day of Remembrance and Honor.” The document states that it has become a tradition in Uzbekistan to commemorate this day widely, showing special care and deep respect for war and labor veterans who contributed to the victory in World War II, while also honoring the memory of military personnel and law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty during the years of independence.

The decree highlights that around 2 million Uzbeks were sent to the frontlines during World War II, of whom over 538,000 were killed and more than 158,000 went missing in action. In the country’s modern history, around 200 service members and law enforcement officers have given their lives in defense of the homeland.

«We will always cherish in our hearts the boundless bravery, resilience, and self-sacrifice of our fathers and grandfathers, as well as the courage of the brave sons who gave their lives for peace and independence,» the resolution states.

Festive events and ceremonies honoring veterans will be held across the country on May 9.

The government has been tasked with providing additional support measures for veterans of the 1941–1945 war. These include home repairs and improvements for lonely and low-income veterans, establishing home care and ongoing medical assistance services, and providing free vouchers for health resort stays with one accompanying person.

According to the document, both World War II veterans and home front workers will be awarded commemorative medals marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in World War II.

The president has also instructed the Ministry of Defense, in cooperation with the Tashkent city administration (hokimiyat), to organize a festive salute and fireworks on May 9.

Last year, in honor of the Day of Remembrance and Honor, each World War II veteran in Uzbekistan received 18 million soums ($1,600). As of 2023, there were 174 veterans living in the country, but by May 2024, that number had declined to 112.
