Kyrgyzstan will phase out settlement colonies, Justice Minister Ayaz Bayetov announced at a briefing on August 19, Kabar reported.

Bayetov explained that correctional facilities include prisons as well as settlement colonies, where convicted individuals were required to check in and undergo supervision.

“However, this led to people stopping their visits to settlement colonies to check in. Later, we introduced probation, and it turned out that the two systems duplicated each other. There was also a shortage of staff. Now these settlement colonies will be dismantled, and everything will transition to the probation system,” the minister said.

According to him, five such institutions will be eliminated first, followed by another five. President Sadyr Japarov signed the corresponding decree on August 4.
