The presidents of Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Serdar Berdimuhamedov, signed an agreement on October 8 to create a Supreme Council for Strategic Partnership, the Uzbek leader's press service reported.
The agreement «forms a solid institutional foundation for further deepening political dialogue and expanding practical cooperation in priority areas,» the statement said.
During the meeting, the two sides noted positive trends in trade and economic cooperation. Trade turnover has grown steadily since the start of the year, and the «Shavat–Dashoguz» border trade zone is operating successfully. The leaders also adopted a action plan to multiply bilateral trade several times over, along with a cooperation program covering industry, energy, transport, agriculture and water management.
Mirziyoyev arrived in Turkmenistan on October 7 to attend the eighth Consultative Meeting of the heads of state of Central Asia and Azerbaijan, as well as the upcoming summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
