Visa-Free Regime Between Tajikistan and Iran Now Fully in Force

Citizens of Tajikistan and Iran can now cross their shared border without visas not only by air but also through land border crossings, Khovar reported, citing Tajikistan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Starting October 5, holders of valid ordinary civil foreign passports may enter, transit, or temporarily stay in the other country without a visa for up to 30 days within a 90-day period. The visa-free regime now applies to all international border crossings, including land crossings and international airports, as well as to air routes from third countries.

The visa-free regime was established by a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Dushanbe on November 8, 2023. In the first phase, which took effect on August 10, 2024, it applied only to travelers on the Dushanbe–Tehran and Tehran–Dushanbe flights. Visas were required to cross land borders or to enter via third countries.

The expansion comes as direct air service resumes after a long interruption. Flights were suspended in early 2026 because of airspace restrictions in the Middle East, but service between Dushanbe and Tehran resumed on May 31.

The visa-free regime does not grant the right to long-term residence or employment. Separate requirements under the legislation of both countries still apply. Tajik citizens planning to stay in Iran for more than 30 days must obtain a visa in advance from the Iranian embassy in Dushanbe.
